Matanuska Glacier, Glenn Hwy, Alaska

Just a 2.5 hour drive north-east of Anchorage, the Matanuska Glacier sits off the scenic Glenn Highway. You can approach the Matanuska on foot, after you enter the private Matanuska Glacier Park Resort and drive to the terminus parking area. There are guided tours, but we decided to “explore” the glacier on our own. And what an impressive experience this was - a colossal, rippled, silt-scoured river of ice 40km long. The sheer ice walls, deep drain holes called moulins, the blue-lit caves and the groaning, creaking sounds make the visit unforgettable.
